For even in Nietzsche’s phrasing, it is only “after long usage” that these “illusions” of meaning “seem to a nation fixed, canonic, and binding.” In other words, the appearance of identity that metaphor would describe between a particular claim to the truth and the truth itself is not ultimately secured by the appropriateness of metaphor, that is, by a convincing appearance of identity between this truth and truth as such, between the imagery used and the thing for which it stands in; this appearance of identity is itself secured by the ongoing exchange of one term for another and the truth-values that accrue to a point at which the “nation” that specializes this economy simply forgets that it is speaking a specialized language and citing a code, that is, forgets it is speaking a jargon. It is secured by the seemingly natural survival of the words themselves in the flux of communal communicability—in short, by the inflationary economics at hand in the physicality of the saying. more open to radical difference and incommensurability just to expose the arbitrariness of relativism's role in current regime/stuff. by arbitrariness i mean that it has been selected this way and not that it is unpredictable or outside discussion. actually if i said it was arbitrary i think this would be pretty meaningless but still worth being bitter over.<BR/><BR/>now im really unsure about retconning as a backdoor kind of political analysis, but i figure it's only about as bad as history. another thing i have wanted to include in this or write a 2nd installment about is the relationilty and interconnectedness of relativism, the thing about rhizome vs family tree i guess and that in relativism it's not that, in the theory itself, everything must be connected (tho that might be 'true'), but that relativism functions by comparisons and making connections, which it's theoretical posture excuses and you even feel like you're doing a good job to make a comparison when you're doing the relativist thing.

okay maybe i'm just tired and this should be obvio...

okay maybe i'm just tired and this should be obvious - but i'm not sure i see where you're going here, so i'm going to ask for clarification: i liked your first point (on the invocation of a consumerist relativism that renders local commodities equivalent but only vis-a-vis the third term of global goods), but then you lost me on the second point (which seemed to be both about relativism as complicit in the production of so-called free and equal jural subjects and also about some incommensurable difference inherent in "forms of human life"). i guess my question then is: do you really need to make the later argument - about incommensurablity and/or radical difference - in order to make the former point regarding relativism as a technique of liberal governance? i.e. can you be both open to the possibility of commensuration despite the aporia of 'universal difference' and also critical of relativism, or are the two points necessarily dependent on each other??<BR/><BR/>-michal
<link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml'
